How to use: Each slider represents one civilizational system scored 0–100%. Defaults reflect real-world conditions as of April 2026, grounded in peer-reviewed sources. Drag any slider to model scenarios. Hover sliders to see the source rationale. See the References tab for all citations.
Probability trajectory — 2026 to 2100
Reading the timeline: Collapse probability (amber) models severe civilizational stress. Extinction risk (red) incorporates AI misalignment and biosecurity multipliers. The gap between the curves is the human-recoverable territory. As they converge, the recovery window closes. The Meaning Crisis amplifier (purple line) shows how epistemic fragmentation accelerates both curves.
Coupling matrix: How strongly does each row system amplify stress in each column system? Values 0.0–1.0. High coupling means failure in one system directly accelerates failure in another. Based on Homer-Dixon et al. (2015) and Lawrence et al. (2024) — see References tab.

Strongest coupling pathways
Estimated collapse probability reduction per intervention, ranked by leverage. ◆ Parallel Mind tags indicate areas where decentralized coordination architecture directly reduces risk — the highest-leverage intersection of the Polis Labs mission and civilizational resilience.
The Parallel Mind framework maps distributed intelligence, voluntary coordination, and censorship-resistant infrastructure onto the highest-leverage polycrisis intervention points. This tab shows where the Polis Labs / Logos stack directly addresses civilizational risk — and where it cannot substitute for physical-world interventions.
◆ John Vervaeke's Meaning Crisis Framework
The meaning crisis — characterized by widespread loss of purpose, belonging, and shared epistemic frameworks — functions as a civilizational multiplier. A society losing coherence and shared sensemaking is measurably less capable of coordinating responses to every other crisis. This tab draws on Vervaeke's cognitive-scientific framework and current epidemiological data to situate meaning crisis as the 10th civilizational system variable.

Meaning crisis amplification effect on collapse probability
The amplification mechanism: Vervaeke identifies three primary pathways — absurdity (loss of shared narrative), alienation (disconnection from community and cosmos), and anxiety (ontological insecurity). Each pathway reduces a society's adaptive capacity. The model applies a 0.15× multiplier: for every 10 points below 50% on the meaning crisis slider, collapse probability increases by 1.5 percentage points across the 2030–2050 window.
Epistemic transparency
This model is a simplified systems dynamics representation. Coupling coefficients are estimated from the literature below rather than empirically derived from full data regression. Probability functions use a simplified multiplicative form rather than stochastic differential equations. The appropriate use is comparative scenario analysis and sensitivity testing — not point prediction. Specific percentage outputs should be understood as directionally indicative rather than precisely calibrated. For more rigorous treatment, see the Cascade Institute's polycrisis modeling and the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute's quantitative assessments.
What this model is
The Polis Labs Polycrisis Risk Model is an interactive systems dynamics tool mapping nine interlocking civilizational systems, plus a tenth meaning crisis dimension, onto probabilistic risk trajectories. It is designed for scenario analysis, collective sensemaking, and coordination — not precise forecasting.
The model is a research output of Polis Labs, an independent nonprofit research institute studying how free communities coordinate, why they fail, and what frameworks help them endure. The Parallel Mind tab connects civilizational risk directly to the coordination architecture that Polis Labs researches.
Mathematical structure
Aggregate health score:
H = weighted_avg(s_i × w_i) where weights reflect geopolitical (1.5×), tech (1.3×), governance (1.2×) priority
Critical window:
W = f(H) — years before probability curves become difficult to reverse
Limitations
The model does not capture non-linear tipping points, feedback loops below the system level, stochastic shocks, or the full complexity of geopolitical dynamics. Coupling coefficients are estimated, not empirically derived. The meaning crisis amplifier is based on theoretical modeling, not longitudinal outcome data. All probabilities should be interpreted as order-of-magnitude estimates suitable for sensitivity analysis.
